Biography

Dr. Lily Halsted received her undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon with a double major in cellular/molecular biology, and psychology. She holds a master’s degree in cognitive psychology and a Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the University of Oregon.

Dr. Halsted’s main areas of specialty are Physiological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Psycholinguistics and Developmental Psychology. Dr. Halsted regularly offers courses in Psychology of Learning, Physiological Psychology, Psychology of Language and History of Psychology. She is very passionate about her teaching and mentorship of students and has won teaching awards for her dedication to her students and their learning.

Her research interests include the study of bilinguality and social influences that affect bilingual speakers. Since most of the world’s population speak more than one language, and all bilinguals code-switch (switch between spoken languages) on a regular basis, Dr. Halsted has always been interested in the factors that contribute to this phenomenon. To seek answers to this question, she has conducted studies on code-switching among bilinguals who speak Arabic, German, Spanish, and French. Her most recent research focuses on German bilinguals and the reasons why they code-switch less frequently than speakers of other languages.
