Biography

Joanna Katsanos has been with Queens since 2004 and is a Senior Instructor in the Biology Department. She enjoys teaching a variety of courses such as Cellular and Molecular Foundations, Microbiology, Genetics, and Anatomy and Physiology.

She is one of the SEA-PHAGES faculty members at Queens that have played a role in implementing the two semester, authentic undergraduate discovery-based research project into the biology curriculum. Students begin by collecting soil samples and isolating and characterizing novel viruses. This is followed by genome annotation and bioinformatics analysis of the novel virus leading to a publication in GenBank, the NIH genetic sequence database.

Professor Katsanos was the recipient of the William S. Lee Distinguished Professor Award in 2010 and has served as an advisor for honors and independent research student projects. She also serves as a Royal Advisor.
