Queens University Celebrates Malek Jandali ’97 as New Steinway Artist

Queens University of Charlotte is celebrating a historic achievement for Malek Jandali ’97, the university’s Composer-in-Residence. In January 2026, Jandali was named a Steinway Artist by Steinway & Sons, an honor representing the highest level of excellence in the world of classical music. With this recognition, Jandali enters an elite roster of musicians that includes legendary figures and contemporary icons alike. The Steinway Artist program, founded in 1872, is reserved for those who have reached the pinnacle of their craft.
“Malek’s recognition as a Steinway Artist is a moment of tremendous pride for Queens University of Charlotte,” said alumnus and trustee emeritus Sam McMahon, Jr. ’54. “His achievements exemplify the power of a Queens education and the profound impact our alumni continue to make on the world stage.”
The McMahons’ pride in Jandali’s success is deeply personal. As an undergraduate, Jandali was a McMahon Music Scholar and studied under Paul Nitsch, who was himself a student of the legendary Steinway Artist Leon Fleisher. The McMahons’ long-standing commitment to the arts was recognized in 2024 when they received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for their distinguished service to the university. From the Carolyn G. McMahon Center for Music to the renovated Gambrell Center, their continued support and vibrant legacy have impacted several areas across campus.
A Tradition of Excellence
Jandali joins a roster of Steinway Artists that includes giants such as Lang Lang, Billy Joel, and Martha Argerich, as well as historical legends like Duke Ellington and Sergei Rachmaninoff. This recognition solidifies his status as a leading voice in contemporary classical music and is an example of the musical excellence fostered at Queens.
“Steinway & Sons is delighted to welcome Malek Jandali as a Steinway Artist — an acclaimed composer-pianist and humanitarian whose work bridges traditions and communities,” said Vivian Chiu, Director of Cultural Partnerships & Artist Services at Steinway & Sons.
A Global Musical Ambassador
Jandali’s influence extends far beyond the Queens campus. As the founder and CEO of Pianos for Peace, he uses music as a tool for social change and education, reflecting his deep-rooted humanitarian values. He also serves as the Composer-in-Residence for Qatar Museums and the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra.
Known for blending Western classical structures with traditional Arabic musical modes, Jandali’s prolific work will soon be showcased locally. The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra will perform his “Clarinet Concerto,” a piece dedicated to victims of injustice, on March 6 and 7 at the Belk Theatre in Charlotte, NC.
